Maltese say yes to divorce

Maltese say yes to divorce

By Matthew Xuereb (AFP)

VALLETTA — Voters in the overwhelmingly Catholic Mediterranean state of Malta have voted in favour of legalising divorce, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi announced on Sunday after a weekend referendum.

Gonzi, who campaigned against the introduction of divorce in the last European country where it is illegal, said it was now up the Mediterranean archipelago's parliament to legalise the dissolution of marriage.

"This is not the result that I wished for, but the will of the people has to be respected and parliament should enact a law for the introduction of divorce," the conservative prime minister said.

Malta is one of only two countries in the world -- the Philippines is the other -- that bans divorce. Chile was the last country to legalise divorce in 2004 after overwhelming public pressure.

Saturday's non-binding referendum asked the island's 306,000 mainly Catholic voters whether parliament should introduce a new law that would allow couples to obtain a divorce after four years of separation.

Legal separation is widespread in the European Union's smallest member state, but there are many legal obstacles to re-marrying.

"The yes vote has won and we urge parliamentarians to vote a bill for the introduction of divorce," said lawyer Deborah Schembri, who led the 'yes' campaign.

With ballots still being counted and an official result not expected until later Sunday, Schembri said the yes camp had won around 54 percent of the vote based on a sample from different constituencies.

Arthur Galea Salomone, spokesman for the anti-divorce campaign, admitted "the people's choice was clear, they opted for the introduction of divorce."

Divorce legislation is likely to squeeze through parliament as Gonzi's ruling Nationalist Party has the slimmest of majorities -- one seat -- and analysts have said at least one of his MPs had backed the yes campaign.

The Roman Catholic Church, which looms large over the archipelago where 95 percent of the population claim the faith, did not campaign officially in the referendum. However, Malta's Archbishop Paul Cremona had warned churchgoers in a letter they face a choice between building or destroying family values.

Marriages can only be annulled by the Catholic Church's Ecclesiastical Tribunal in a complex and rare procedure that takes around eight years.

The only exception to the divorce ban is for Maltese married to foreign nationals or Maltese who are permanent residents abroad.

Three months in jail for one-night stand

Three months in jail for one-night stand
Published: Gulfnews.com on May 19, 2011

Dubai: A young Filipino receptionist has been sentenced to three months in prison after she admitted having a one-night stand in the bathroom of Chi@The Lodge nightclub.

Her sexual escapade with a man she doesn't know resulted in pregnancy and miscarriage.

H.S., 21, had pleaded guilty to all charges when she first appeared in court on March 22, 2011.

H.S said she went to Chi@The Lodge nightclub behind Al Nasr Club at 9.30pm on December 12 last year to unwind.

She said she was having drinks at the club's bar when she was approached by a man who befriended her and asked her to join him on the dance floor.

"After dancing for a while, I excused myself to go to the bathroom," she recalled.

The man followed her, according to prosecution records.

"When I got out of the toilet booth, I was surprised to see him inside the bathroom. I asked him what he was doing there, but he didn't answer. Instead, he held me and before I knew it he was kissing me and leading me inside the booth," she testified to police officers at Al Rifffa police station.

H.S. said she later had consensual sex with the man.

Records revealed that she was drunk at that time.

H.S said she doesn't know the name of the man but described him as of average height and well-built.

"He was from the Philippines. He had a broad body and average height. His body was tanned. He wore a shirt and faded blue jeans," she told prosecutors.

About a week later, she said, she began to bleed but thought it was due to her menstrual cycle.

She said she didn't know she was pregnant and had a miscarriage until she was told by doctors at Dubai Hospital where she was admitted for treatment weeks later. Doctors who treated H.S. testified she had had a miscarriage. The Dubai Court of Misdemeanours also fined her Dh1,000 for consuming alcohol. She will be deported after serving her jail term.

The Politics of Smell

The Politics of Smell
Published on May 16, 2011 http://www.newsbreak.ph

LONDON—A few months after I arrived in England, I worked in a crowded office filled with people of different nationalities. One afternoon, I noticed a foul smell in the air. It was so acrid I thought it was of an industrial nature. “What on earth is that smell?,” I thundered. Everybody froze. I should have heeded the stunned silence but I carried on, making gagging noises and opening the windows.

Minutes later, the manager arrived and took me aside. He explained that the smell emanated from another (foreign) colleague and that I should be more sensitive towards her. He asked me not to complain loudly again in future.
I staggered back to my desk completely mortified. One, I honestly did not know that it was a human odor; I thought noxious fumes were invading the office! Two, I did not intend to humiliate anyone. I was a foreigner myself; it bothered me that I had been accused of cultural insensitivity.

Maybe I should have played the culture card, too, and told my boss, look, I’m Filipino and I have a built-in reflex against funkiness of that magnitude. It’s not about race. We don’t care what color you are, if you stink, you stink.

However, this I’m-Pinoy-I-can’t-stand-smelly-people defense, while arguably valid on the grounds of being a unique cultural trait, sounds lame in a cosmopolitan environment and in the homeland of the stiff upper lip.

Consider this exchange I had a couple of weeks ago at a supermarket:

Pinay 1: Ano ba naman! Ang baho-baho!

Pinay 2: Sino sa palagay mo yung mabaho?

Me: Yun yatang lalake sa may harap ng pila.

Pinay 1: Alin, yung naka-GREEN na T-SHIRT?

Me: Naku, huwag niyo hong ilakas masyado ang boses niyo!

Pinay 1: Eh bakit ba? Kung siya nga, ang lakas ng amoy niya.

This encounter kept me chuckling for days but my (British) husband thought it cruel. What if the man couldn’t help smelling like that? Maybe he had a medical condition. Maybe he was homeless. What was to be gained by pinpointing him? Oo nga naman.

We had previously discussed this Pinoy loathing of B.O. in relation to an odor-related issue at his office (i.e., stinky colleague). It took them ages to address the situation. The British approach: 1) Sit there po-faced and endure the stench. 2) Elect someone to have a “quiet word” with said colleague and offer advice/help.

Very tactful, I admit. But did it work? No. My husband asked me how Pinoys would handle such a scenario.

Well, I never experienced anything like it in Manila but I can guess the following maneuvers will be involved: 1) Making jokes about who’s got the “power.” 2) Relocating the colleague to an isolated nook, away from electric fans and air-conditioners. 3) Spraying Glade in that general direction, even when he’s there. 4) Leaving blocks of tawas on his desk. Bit of an overkill, I know, but how do you deal with someone with an over kili-kili? (Sorry, I couldn’t help it.)

I won’t apologize for this Pinoy olfactory bias, it just is. Antonio Morga chronicled our love of bathing in 1609—this preoccupation is not going away soon.

But while we may not be able to help how sensitive our noses are, we need to moderate our instincts in a globalized setting. I’ve learned to just move away quietly if I can. If that’s not an option, opening windows slightly is okay, though it might be tricky in winter. The most desperate measure I’ve ever tried is to stop breathing through my nostrils by channelling air through my slightly open mouth. It’s just like snorkelling.

The following standard Pinoy reactions to stink will be considered extremely rude in this country: Sounding off (parinig), fanning the front of your nose with your palm (the pamaypay gesture), casting withering glances at the culprit (titig na matalim, sabay irap), making a noisy, graceless exit (pagdadabog), and tying your scarf around the lower half of your face (I know several Pinoys who have done this in various European locations, no kidding).

Of course we could ask who’s more rude, those who complain about offensive odors or those who inflict their odors on others? Then again, what is “offensive?” In some countries, a certain degree of body funk is considered perfectly acceptable. Hereabouts, people do not generally appreciate horrid bodily smells; it’s just that they consider politeness as more paramount.

The reality is that we are defenseless against pongy humans outside the Philippine area of responsibility. There are remedies for almost all other sensory assaults. If neighbors are too noisy, I can report them to the noise patrol. If a stranger tries to caress me, I can call the police.

But I can’t summon the cops when someone’s nasty emanations permeate a shared space. What would I say to them anyway? Officers, arrest this man! He is trying to asphyxiate me with his stench! If they jail anyone, it will probably be me for having a bigot of a nose.

One last tip on this matter: Don’t use or pack powdered tawas when travelling abroad. Customs police will find it hard to believe you use a crystal substance as a deodorant. And when they arrest you for drug trafficking and ask you to raise your arms over your head, it will look like you have cocaine and glitter on your armpits. That will be very, very difficult to explain. – Newsbreak

3 Pinays face drug raps in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Three Filipinas facing illegal drug charges in Dubai are receiving help from the Philippine government, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Tuesday.

The DFA, in a press statement, said the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai identified the Filipinos as Crizelda Empleo, Jackie Lou Jabate and Rhoda Guisingam, who are accused of trafficking the hallucinogen Tramadol.

"An experienced and competent Bahraini lawyer hired by the Consulate will represent the Filipinas in today’s hearing," Consul General Benito Valeriano said.

Mohammed Pukunum, head of the Assistance-to-Nationals (ATN) section of the Consulate, attended an earlier court hearing on the case last January 2.

Guisinga, Jabate, and Empleo were arrested inside the Hamarain Mall last November 10, according to the DFA.

The trio went to the mall where Guisinga told her friends she had to meet an Egyptian.

She was arrested by Dubai police, who later found a red plastic bag allegedly with illegal drugs in her possession. The bag was allegedly handed over by the Egyptian.

Jabate and Empleo were waiting for Guisinga when were also arrested by Dubai police officers.

Guisinga was charged with possession of illegal drugs while Jabate and Empleo were both charged with criminal complicity or "accessory to possession of illegal drugs."

The 3 Filipinas are on "visit visas" and are not overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), the DFA said.

The Consulate's ATN officers regularly visit the Filipinas at the Al Muraqqabat police station where they are detained and have given them consular and legal assistance, it added.

Maid accused of stealing admits to letting lover into sponsor's home

Maid accused of stealing admits to letting lover into sponsor's home
Published in Gulfnews on May 4, 2011

Dubai: A housemaid admitted in court that she allowed a mechanic to enter her sponsor's house where they had consensual sex but both denied theft.

Prosecutors accused the 33-year-old Filipina housemaid of allowing her lover, an Egyptian mechanic, to enter her Emirati sponsor's villa where they had consensual sex.

They had also been accused of stealing a safe containing Dh8,750 in cash, Dh20,000 worth of jewellery in addition to cheques, documents, ATM cards and a mobile phone.

"Yes I allowed him into the house… but we did not steal," 33-year-old R.R. argued before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

"Sir I trespassed into her sponsor's house and had consensual sex with her… but I didn't steal," her alleged accomplice, 36-year-old W.F., submitted before Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir Fahmi in courtroom 4.

Suspicion

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said R.R. allowed W.F. to enter her sponsor's house without the sponsor's knowledge and they had consensual sex several times in the guest room adjacent to the main house.

They were additionally charged with stealing the Emirati man's belongings. The 42-year-old Emirati testified that he discovered that the safe was missing after he checked his e-mails.

"I opened the closet to change my clothes, then I discovered that the safe was missing.

"My wife, children and two housemaids [including R.R.] were at my in-law's place. I suspected that one of the housemaids must have helped an outsider and reported to the police. During questioning, R.R. admitted that she was involved in the robbery."

A Yemeni first corporal, who questioned R.R., testified: "She alleged that she met W.F. and fell in love with him. Then she allowed him to enter her sponsor's place several times to have sex."
