Filipino to be prosecuted for deaths of D'Souza children

Three to be prosecuted for deaths of D'Souza children
Published in Gulfnews 22.03.10

Dubai: A doctor, a cook and a restaurant supervisor are being prosecuted for negligence which allegedly led to the deaths of two children from food poisoning.

Prosecutors charged the 46-year-old Iraqi woman doctor, 25-year-old Nepalese cook and 33-year-old Filipino supervisor with negligence leading to the deaths of a five-year-old boy, Nathan D'Souza, and his seven-year-old sister Chelsea, last year.

The three suspects pleaded not guilty when they appeared before the Dubai Misdemeanours Court.

Gulf News has learnt that the defendants are scheduled to appear in court Monday to submit their defence or ask for an adjournment to hear prosecution witnesses.

Video from a memorial service for the children:

The Iraqi doctor's lawyer Mohammad Al Suwaidi told Gulf News Sunday: "My client has pleaded innocent since the beginning of the investigation … she denied any negligence. The forensic doctor testified during the prosecution's questioning that my client did not commit any malpractice. We might submit our defence in today's hearing."

Senior prosecution sources told Gulf News that the cook and the supervisor have been charged with violating the public health requirements of Dubai Municipality through unhygienic practices in preserving the food, which led to bacterial contamination.

The doctor was charged with negligence in providing medical care to the children when they were admitted to hospital after eating a meal from the restaurant.

According to the chargesheet, prosecutors said the children did not receive the necessary medical care to treat the food poisoning. The restaurant has also been added to the list of suspects.

In October, the Dubai Public Prosecution had assigned the higher committee for medical liability in Abu Dhabi to look into the case.

My Story: Taking Chances

Taking Chances
Mrs. Michelle Ann Perez-RAMOS

Like the expected emotional scene of parting ways with my family, it is a bit difficult for me at a young age to let go, turn back and take chances to a country I’ve never been.

While sitting in the waiting area at the airport, I was in the midst of my distress; thinking what will happen to me; worried who will take care of my parents; longing for my boyfriend’s affection; will I survive the urban life away from the life I’ve used to? I am so afraid, so worried, so hypocrite in showing how strong, how well planned, and confident I am in everything, though the truth inside of me is the opposite.

I almost can’t hold the tears in my eyes, but as I’ve heard a voice from a woman, sitting just right next to me, telling her son over the phone, “Everything will be alright…Mommy will just be away for a year then we’ll be seeing each other again… That will be very quick honey and once I’m back, I can already buy you the remote-controlled car you’ve always wanted….” A soft, calm, and convincing voice while tears in her eyes are flowing – turned the reason why the tears in my eyes suddenly touch my cheeks.

Those words that I’ve just heard struck my heart. Making me realized that I am so lucky. I’ll be taking chances abroad because I want to start a new life and not because I am oblige to. This is my choice and I want to do it because I want to prepare myself for the life ahead of me. I am in control and everything is up to me now.

I’ve managed to bring my boyfriend here and he has now a better career. I am now financing a house and lot for my parents and slowly giving them the comfort of life. I know I’ve neglected most of my personal needs but the feeling of taking part of your love ones’ happiness filled the incompleteness of me.

It’s been 1 year and 10 months since I’ve left our home country. I cannot say that it is such an easy journey, but it is indeed a wonderful experience. I’ve learned to be independent, mature, responsible, and stronger than I used to be. Step-by-step I know I can reach my goal.

Three days from now, I’ll be flying back home. My boyfriend and I are getting married in the Philippines after sharing six years of ups-and-downs. And here in UAE is where we realized to move to the next level.

I still remember the scenario at the airport way back in the Philippines. It might be a usual situation for most of OFWs parting ways to their family. But I think, that very scenario, is a soft slap in my face, to make me realize that I am just about to start; live my life to the fullest and plan right. I may not be in control of my destiny but at least I did something to make every turn and twist right.

Halo Headlights

Most people love their cars as they love themselves. They try to make it as elegant as possible. They make sure that they equip their vehicle with a lot of stuff that varies from each other. One of them is the Halo Headlights.

Halo Headlights are headlights that can be fitted to your vehicle to give it a smarter, sleeker and more modern look. The name is derived from the effect that they give with their small circle of lights surrounding the main projector light which gives it a halo effect. These lights generally have a blue tinge to them and can in certain brands generate thirty percent more lighting than in regular headlights. Not only are they more eye-catching and appealing, but they are more effective too. One thing to always check when looking into purchasing your own halo lights is if they are compatible with your vehicles wiring system. Many manufactures say that their products have “plug to play” features and are easy to fit yourself but you should always make one hundred percent sure. It is always advisable to have a professional look at it first for you and help you fit the lights if you are unsure as to how to do so.

So, what are you waiting for? visit http://www.carid.com/projector-headlights.html to know more about headlights.

Filipina attacked in Wafi Mall critical

Filipina attacked in Wafi Mall critical
By Siham Al Najami, Staff Reporter

Dubai: A Filipina and her Nepali partner, who stabbed her before stabbing himself while she was on duty in a beauty salon at Wafi Mall, are currently undergoing treatments for severe injuries at a Dubai hospital, a senior police source confirmed.

Late on Thursday evening, Gulf News reported on an attack when a Filipina, in her thirties, was stabbed by a man in Wafi Mall, Dubai. Large bloodstains were spotted on the first floor - where the woman works - and few more blood stains on the second floor close to the escalator.

The ambulance and police units who were present at the scene cordoned off the areas at the first and second floors with the assistance of the mall security officials.

“The Nepali man, in his thirties, came to the work place of the Filipina and asked for her. When he saw her he stabbed her in the stomach and injured another older Nepali woman working in the salon when she intervened in an attempt to prevent the attack. The man collapsed on the floor after stabbing himself in the stomach just outside the salon in an attempt to commit suicide,” a police source told Gulf News.

The Nepali woman sustained minor to moderate injuries and was later released from the hospital while the Filipina and the suspect sustained severe injuries.

“There was a lot of blood near the beauty salon and while they were carrying the man and the woman…I saw the sheets covered in blood,” said an eyewitness.

According to the police source, the older Nepali woman ran from the salon to the second floor in an attempt to seek rescue, which is why blood was spotted on the second floor as well.

"I work at a restaurant on the third floor while she works in the first floor. She is a regular customer at our restaurant and it was shocking to see her white uniform covered in blood. She fainted in the second floor as she had fled from the first floor where she was stabbed," said an eyewitness.

The Police source said the Nepali man and the Filipina were in a relationship, but are still investigating the cause of the attack.

“We are still investigating the matter and it’s still early to establish the cause of the attack especially when both the victim and the suspect are in a critical condition,” he said.
