Opportunities Abound for Filipinos in Canada
Times are tough for overseas Filipinos in the UAE right now. Work Permit renewals are being denied. Wages are low and do not seem to be rising. What options do nurses, midwives, caregivers and teachers working in the Emirates currently have?
For many, the best options seem to be found abroad. In particular, Canada has developed into a top choice for overseas Filipinos. Rich, friendly, open and boasting a community of over 400 000 Filipinos, Canada is the new land of opportunity for those seeking greener pastures for themselves and their families.
In a recent Economist study ranking the world’s cities for livability, Canada’s three main cities (Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary) placed 1st, 5th, and 7th respectively. Canadian residents enjoy free World Class health care and education in safe communities that are situated in some of the most beautiful natural settings anywhere in the world. Toronto has been described as the “most diverse city in the world.” Hundreds of cultures and peoples coexist in this vibrant and fun city (including several hundred thousand Pinoys.)
The population of Canada is aging and shrinking. This means that there are shortages in many occupational fields. The most pressing shortage is for live-in caregivers for children and the elderly.
Recognizing this, the government of Canada has created the Live-In Caregiver Program. This program allows qualified foreigners to work in Canada for 2 years. After the contract is completed the employee is eligible to become a Canadian citizen. At this point the employee can sponsor her own family. During the contracted period many employees take advantage of subsidized educational programs. After the contract is complete, (2 years) employees are issued open work permits and can work in any field, for any employer anywhere in the country.
